The Hierarchy
Logic
4 and ½ stars (out of six)
With Logic’s fourth release, The Hierarchy sees this ensemble maturing into an even more excellent group. As with the previous albums, the distinct compositional skills of Glen Cannon and Tim Wilson rule the roost, but there is a change in the air here with WA bassist Dane Alderson putting his hand to the rhythm section plough. Coupled with Ben Vanderwal, the 2 make a fine show of it! Check out the bass and drums intro to the title track for confirmation. Vanderwal’s drumming here brings a very Keith Carlock-like quality to many of these tunes, but certainly not in a merely emulative way. Ben’s voice is much stronger here than on 2008’s Native Strut, which saw him take over the drum chair from Darryn Farrugia and it’s obvious that he “owns” his place with much more confidence. The Hierarchy is undoubtedly the best release from this group to date. Also of note, these guys have filmed a show at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club in Melbourne, which should hopefully be released on DVD sometime in the not too distant future.

Logic? proudly announces the release of it's second album 'The Waiting Game'. This new release showcases the ensemble's diverse musical influences, and their evolving group concept. Whilst maintaining a focus on developing a fresh, contemporary sound, the group also prides itself on preserving the spontaneous and interactive approach of the jazz tradition.
The 7 tracks presented on 'The Waiting Game' represent a variety of different styles, and contrast from compositions based on complex rhythmic and harmonic patterns, to simple grooves. 6 of the tracks are originals, with the only cover being an extended arrangement of the Dizzy Gillespie classic, 'A Night in Tunisia'.
